Betty Greene

In a few days we'll celebrate MAF's first operational flight. On February 23, 1946, Betty Greene flew MAF's new plane on its inaugural flight. She piloted two Wycliffe workers to a remote jungle location in Mexico.

Mission Aviation Fellowship is a team of aviation and communication specialists overcoming barriers in isolated and remote regions in support of more than 300 Christian and humanitarian organizations around the world. MAF was founded in 1945 by former World War II pilots who loved the Lord Jesus, loved flying, and wanted to see their two loves joined. MAF's first field pilot, Betty Greene, one of the five MAF founders, was a true pioneer who flew the mission's inaugural flight piloting a Waco biplane. Today, some 180 MAF families continue to overcome barriers along the isolated frontiers of our faith in Africa, Asia, Eurasia, and Latin America.

Venezuela Exit

This news from Dave McCleery, MAF's interim Latin America Region director:

Our Venezuela Staff left the country late last week in response to a government directive for North American missionaries to leave the jungle provinces. Our two planes were flown by Bruce DeVries/Dan Whitehead and Matt Cox/Dale Shaylor to Sanford, Florida where we were granted free parking by the FBO (through a contact that Dale Shaylor had through New Tribes). Mauricio Sanchez is our scout on the front lines and ‘remained behind’ at our base in Puerto Ayacucho to monitor activity and maintain a visible presence. Future plans remain uncertain until we see what happens with the government this month. Through this situation, it has been amazing to see our Lord opening and closing doors and preparing in ways we still can’t see clearly. Keep praying for the decisions that we must make in the next weeks and for our families that are facing some unknowns.

Super Bowl Moment For Missions

This from Daniel & Karen Carlson, MAF Staff who live and work in Kinshasha, West Democratic Republic of Congo:

Sometimes an opportunity comes up that gives you the tingles or maybe holy giggles. How about a "Moment for Missions" during the Super Bowl? Dan got a call from a Covenant missionary up country in the area he grew up in. “Would MAF be able to fly a medical team from Kinshasa to Karawa on Saturday early enough to get video footage?” ABC decided they wanted to do a human interest story about Kathy and Calla Holmgren [wife and daughter of Seahawks Head Coach , Mike Holmgren] to air during the Super Bowl. The initial plans to fly commercially and then travel by truck would not allow ABC's camera man to get any filming done before Sunday.

The medical team and the camera man coming from South Africa all arrive on Friday. Dan will fly them all to Karawa on Saturday. Filming of the team working in the hospital will take place as soon as possible with some individual interviews taking place in Kinshasa Friday night. Sunday morning Dan and the camera man will fly back to Kinshasa where our MAF IT team will transmit the video clip to the States.

Prayer requests:
* Most of all that God will be glorified, not just a "human interest" story
about some nice, dedicated people.
* The eternal purpose of missions will be clearly communicated.
* Interest in medical missions in Congo.
* The Cessna Caravan will be ready to fly with no "surprises" during the
inspection that begins tomorrow, Wednesday.
* Good weather and flight to get to Karawa in enough time for shooting.
* Christian witness with the ABC film camera man.
* Positive exposure for MAF.
* Health and strength for Dan.

Here's a lot more on the story in a Sports Illustrated article, Fantastic Journeys.

Checking In

Just in case you're wondering, we're still here. Life is moving along, good things are happening, and we all are well. More later, or should that be, soon?
